Masterclass with Concert Pianist Tom Kimmance

On Friday 28th October, seventy piano/keyboard players and thirty Year 10 GCSE Music students were privileged to attend a masterclass delivered by local concert pianist, Tom Kimmance. Tom relayed the fascinating story of how he came to be such an accomplished musician, having only started playing the piano as a teenager: self-taught and picking complicated pieces out by ear. Tom talked us through the hours of dedicated practice he put in over the years and brilliantly demonstrated the importance of developing technique and practising scales in order to make even the most difficult music simple to play. His astonishing performances of a variety of piano classics certainly gave us all something to aspire to. For our GCSE musicians, Tom dissected their Beethoven set-work, talking through the ebb and flow of the music, the emotions and struggles involved and how the composer developed his ideas. He then listened to four impressive performances from our students and talked through the different ways in which they could improve their performances, emphasising the importance of understanding harmonies and taking on the role of the ‘listener’ at the same time as performing. Tom finished his masterclass with some brilliant advice on learning how to improvise, culminating in his own bravura arrangement of ‘The Bare Necessities’. All in all, it was an incredible experience for both staff and students and we thank Tom for the preparation he put into this breath-taking learning experience.

Battle of the Bands 2016

Congratulations to “MN-8” for winning Battle of the Bands. Well done to all students who participated in the fantastic lunchtime event. We were treated to music from bands such as Cream, Bastille and The 1975 and the hall was completely packed out with students from all year groups cheering on their favourite bands. Thank you to all students who took part and all staff who were involved. Thank you also to staff who helped with supervision. The winning band consisted of Sam Park, Aaron Jutla, Daniel Mitchell and Ben Peacock from Year 8 who performed Avicii’s Wake Me Up after tirelessly rehearsing every Thursday evening at School of Rock. If you would like to start or join a band, come along to School of Rock on a Thursday after school.
