Monitoring and Reporting Pupil Progress: Guidance for Parents and Carers

Target Setting

We set ambitious but achievable goals for our pupils. From Year 7, pupils are given a GCSE target grade to work towards in each subject. Calculated using their KS2 scores, this an estimate of the most likely GCSE grade they may achieve based on the progress made by other pupils nationally. We encourage pupils to focus on achieving or surpassing this grade if they can. In KS3, we do not share these targets with pupils and parents in our reporting systems. However, we do share targets with pupils in Year 10 and 11, and we encourage pupils to be involved in setting and reviewing their own targets.

Assessing and Monitoring Progress

After changes to the KS3 National Curriculum were introduced in 2013, the National Curriculum Levels used to measure the attainment of pupils in Key Stage 3 became obsolete. Schools now use their own systems to assess pupils and monitor progress.

At Ormskirk School we have developed ‘Progress Paths’ to keep an eye on the progress pupils are making towards their GCSE goals. Pupils’ target grades for each subject are used to plot a ‘trajectory’ on which they should progress. This is done by assigning an internal end of year target for years 7 to 11, providing a benchmark for progress to be judged against.

Progress Paths (and thus end of year targets) vary between subjects, reflecting the different curricula followed. For instance, a pupil with a target of grade 6 or 7 in most subjects may find that their end of year targets may be 2+ in one subject, but 5 in another.

The diagram below illustrates how this variety in Progress Paths may come about:

Reporting Progress

In Go4Schools, parents can access up to date progress information at any time. Each term, formal reports are produced which provide information about pupils’ progression towards their GCSE and end of year targets.

Progress Descriptor

Clarification

Secure

Pupil is surpassing his or her end of year target for this subject and demonstrating strong progress

On target

Pupil is achieving his or her end of year target and making good progress in this subject

Working towards target

Pupil is making solid progress towards his or her end of year target.

Below expectation

Pupil is making slower progress than is desirable towards his or her end of year target.

If pupils are ‘on their progress path’, they are deemed to be ‘Making Expected Progress’. Some pupils may exceed expectation, some may fall slightly or well below their expected level of progress. Parents may be interested to look at the marks their children have achieved in different activities/subjects when this is the case – this can be viewed in Go4Schools.

What to do if you have concerns about your child’s progress

Pupils progress at different rates, so please do not be unduly concerned if your child is not making expected progress in all lessons. In most cases, pupils will be clear about what they need to do to improve and may just need time and support to do so. Looking in their school books or discussing their progress with them will often be informative.

However, if you are concerned about progress in a particular subject, please look at the information on Go4Schools in the first instance. This may show you the aspects of the subject your child is finding challenging, or illustrate the assessments in which they haven’t performed so well. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact your child’s subject teacher in the first instance. This is best done by email.

If you have serious concerns about the progress your child is making more generally it is best to contact their Head of College. Again, this can be done by email initially.
