Ormskirk students excelled themselves at the weekend’s Lancashire Schools Athletics Championship in Blackpool. We secured four first places and three second places, with Year 11 star Lauren not only winning her event but achieving the English Schools qualifying time to take her to the national event in Birmingham next month. Mrs Houghton described the students as outstanding, well done to all involved.
On Wednesday afternoon three representatives from the army came into school and delivered a workshop called “Operation Disaster Relief” to 30 Year 8 students. For two hours the students designed, built, coded and tested a robot, whose mission was to go into a disaster zone, be seen and heard, rescue any survivors and deliver supplies. The students impressed the army with their logical thinking, problem solving and programming skills. A fun and educational afternoon was had by all involved.
Our well attended Parent Forum event this week saw some thought provoking presentations and activities led by Lancashire Mind and our own Computer Science team under Mrs Blackhurst’s leadership. We focused on mental health and well-being as well as online safety. I am very grateful to all the parents who attended and were prepared to share their views, insights and ideas.
Our Duke of Edinburgh Award candidates have been hard at work this week, undertaking practice expeditions. The glorious weather meant that The Lakes were an idyllic setting for all involved and I know that the staff have been incredibly proud of the students. That our students have a genuine care for and appreciation of the environment around them has also been well exemplified by our Year 10 students, who through a ‘Green Day’ approach, raised over £200 towards the cause to save the remaining trees in the area that inspired Shakespeare’s Birnam Wood.
There are some exciting events to look forward to, including: the Y7/8 Presentation Evening on Thursday June 21, the Year 11 Prom on Thursday June 28, the Sixth Form Ball on Monday July 2 and our incredible Summer Concert on Wednesday July 4. It is always a delight to be able to reward and celebrate the achievement of the students, leading me to conclude this week with the words of Roosevelt: “Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.”
