Statement of Intent

In Maths our intent is to develop students’ ability to reason mathematically, to develop an appreciation of the power and relevance of mathematics and to have a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject, to help prepare pupils to progress through their studies and be able to play their full part in the world. 

The maths curriculum covers the aims of the National Curriculum, setting out what we want our students to know and to do, and is planned for all our students, including those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities.  It enables students to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. 

The curriculum will allow students to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine, non-routine, and real life problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.  Students who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material will consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.
Our schemes are challenging, and include clearly defined objectives, literacy support, CEIAG references, pedagogy advice, resources and a rigorous scheme of assessment that assesses throughout the learning journey, as well as at the end.  Throughout the curriculum, concepts are built upon over time and regularly re-visited (in class and in homework), but with increasing complexity over time.

Formative assessment takes place throughout each lesson through, for example, use of mini-whiteboards with directed questioning.  We test pupils at the end of each learning block and we also test at the end of each term. 

The above approach will help students to reach their potential and to equip them with the necessary skills for the next phase in their life.
