Statement of Intent
Our vision for the Science Curriculum at Ormskirk School and Sixth Form is:
To broaden and deepen students’ scientific knowledge and understanding by:
- Supporting students to obtain and retain knowledge, understanding and skills to solve problems and make informed decisions in scientific contexts: by making science easier to learn, logically sequencing and revisiting key ideas.
- Developing students’ ability to advance in scientific inquiry: ultimately being able to plan and carry out practical tasks using a variety of different apparatus and make appropriate conclusions: by increasing demand on practical work.
- Encouraging reading and literacy in science across the curriculum and beyond: by incorporating literacy skills into lessons.
- Using assessment to inform teaching on a regular basis.
- Promoting participation in enrichment science activities.
- Linking ideas together across key stage 3 to 5, within powerful ideas about:
- BIOLOGY: cells; organisation; bioenergetics; genetics; evolution; ecosystems; homeostasis; biological molecules
- CHEMISTRY: atoms; bonding and shapes of substances; energy; periodic table; Earth and atmosphere; amount of substance; chemical reactions; analysis; organic chemistry
- PHYSICS: energy; forces; waves; electricity; particle physics
