Statement of Intent

Everyone needs to consume food on a daily basis; our aim at Ormskirk School is to develop an understanding of food, healthy eating, food purchasing, storage, preparation and making skills so that they can make informed decisions in adult life about food that they are consuming. Food by its very nature is a creative practical and fun subject, which we aim to Inspire, Challenge and Engage pupils.  Our practicals allow students to be imaginative and hands on.  Students use their skills to solve real life human need problems in a variety of contexts.  It is the only subject where students actually get an edible product to take home to family after an hour’s lesson.  Producing a product that is then taken home and shared with family and friends gives students a real sense of achievement and self-worth, with all ability students are able to achieve, which as a school  aim to “build aspirations and achieve excellence.”

At KS4 we aim to provide learners with the opportunity to develop a range of specialist and general skills that would support their progression to employment. Employment in hospitality and catering can range from waiting staff, receptionists and catering assistants to chefs, hotel and bar managers and food technologists in food manufacturing. Britain is the fourth largest industry and accounts for around 10% of the total workforce. Since 2010, over 25% of all new jobs have been within the hospitality and catering sector with the majority of new roles falling within the 18-24 age group.
